FORM TEAMS TO PROMOTE ETHICS
Join the growing number of Oklahoma high schools that are forming student teams to compete in State and National High School Ethics Bowl (NHSEB) programs designed to promote respectful, supportive, and rigorous discussion of ethics.
- What is a High School Ethics Bowl? – The Ethics Bowl is a competitive, yet collaborative, event in which students identify and discuss ethical and moral dilemmas within real-life scenarios. In each round of competition teams take turns analyzing prepared cases while they address underlying ethical issues and respond to questions and comments from opposing teams and a panel of judges.
- How many students are on a team? – Each competitive team may have a minimum of 3 and maximum of 5 students.
- How many teams can represent a high school in the state competition? To encourage greater participation among students, a school may field as many teams as they can sponsor and support.
- Is an Ethics Bowl different from a Debate Competition? - Yes. While case discussions are modeled like debate, they differ significantly in that debate is typically intentionally contentious while ethics discussions are intentionally non-contentious. Students are taught to address ethical issues while considering viewpoints other than their own.
- What are some benefits of involvement? :
- Students learn to work in small, diverse teams with multiple viewpoints, while developing a cohesive approach to the presented scenario with one viewpoint or proposed solution.
- Students learn to value other views.
- It helps develop critical thinking and oral advocacy skills.
- It helps engage in civil discourse and discussion without hate speech and/or personal attacks on members of the opposing team.
- The greater the number of student teams in a school the greater their impact on the campus culture of good character.
- How do teams prepare for competition? - Each Fall, the NHSEB releases a set of cases covering a broad range of issues. The cases then serve as the competition focus for the year. Teams meet together regularly, with a coach, to research the cases, discuss the ethical issues they raise, identify clearly how they think those issues should be addressed, and prepare their thoughts and remarks for presentation during competition.
- Where is the National High School Ethic Bowl? - The National Ethics Bowl is annually held at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill, NC. Normally, it is held for 2 days during the month of April. Future funding is not guaranteed, but travel subsidies have historically been provided for the winning team at the Oklahoma regional competition.
- Where is the Oklahoma Regional Competition? – The state competition is held annually in Oklahoma City, OK. It is normally held during the month of February.
